Here the requirement was for a single large case extending through two floors of the Gallery to display the outstanding collection of scale models of vessels built by the shipyards on the Tyne and Wear. For conservation purposes each model had to be capable of being inspected and if necessary removed. To enable this to be done from behind, we devised a system of heavy duty telescopic brackets on which each model was individually mounted. In order to take the weight of this case and the models, the case had to be designed to distribute the wight evenly over the floor area which also had to be specially strengthened
